Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and the seat of parliament since 1865. The capital city of New Zealand before Wellington was Auckland from 1841 to 1865. Before 1865, Old Russell also called Okiato was the capital of the country. So Okiato was the first capital of New Zealand from 1840 to 1841. After a short time, the seat of government was moved to Auckland.
